This article is discussing what would happen if an amendment is voted on and passed. If this happens every American taxpayer would get a $100 rebate check to offset the pain of higher pump prices for gasoline. This is going to be voted on Thursday. The rebates will go to people based on the amount of money they make per a year. This Idea is proposed by republicans. However they think with the soaring gas prices the democrats will agree with this rebate idea. I think that this is a very good idea and would definitely help make people not as stressed out and angry over the high gas prices. If they don’t do this I think they should keep thinking of something that could be beneficial.

The students are claiming that their privacy is being invaded by the departments ignoring the privacy rules set by the congress. They have strong claims against military recruiters that are using a database to look for potential recruits. The students believe this is against their constitutional rights. I think that this is important because privacy is defiantly becoming obsolete. I know when I was in high school even being a girl my senior year I had recruiters call my house all the time. They would continue to call even thou I repeatedly told them that I was not interested. However I think that suing them is maybe going a little too far. This is also a problem that Americans have; they think that the solution to everything is suing.

This article is discussing the hurricanes that we have been having and it's direct effects on global warming. It says that more are to come. A division director at the National Center for Atmospheric research stated that "The hurricanes we are seeing are indeed a direct result of climate change and it's no longer something we'll see in the future, it's happening now," More hurricanes are expected this year than ever. Living in a coastal town this information is very important to know. I believe we should be well informed of our weather changes and how they are going to affect us. The warmer climates and weather changes are hard to explain the only logical reason that Greg Holland can come up with is that the changes are a direct result of the greenhouse gasses.

Facebook is a social networking website intended for college and high school students. This sight is very similar to myspace however it differs because you have to have a valid school email address. I believe this helps make it a little safer than myspace because not everyone can log on to this sight. This website is drastically growing and is very popular and addicting to college students. I admit myself that I probably check my facebook profile atleast three times a day and I know many people that check it much more than that. As of December 2005 facebook had the largest amount of college users at their website than any other college focused website. I believe that websites like facebook and myspace are beginning to get a little out of control. I do not think that these websites offer much safety and updates need to be made on them to ensure better safty regulations among users.

Myspace.com is a website that has over 72 million users. This website is very popular among college students as well as many other people. People use this site for serveral different purposes. They post message on others users walls, they can search profiles to find out very personal things about people. They also can make their own profile. Many people are not careful about what they put on their profiles and it can be very unsafe. Many people make their profiles very detailed with information such as where they live and upload photos of themselves. I personally think this is a bad idea and can result in many unsafe encounters. A student interviewed said that he believe myspace to be very addictive and cause him and other students to be distracted. Therefore he thinks that banning it from his college library is appropriate.

This article is about the new Nintendo game that the Nintendo company is about to release. This game is called ‘Wii’ which is pronounced we. This name was given to it because they want the market to know that this new game player is intended for the use of everyone. With this game Nintendo chose to go in a different direction and attempt to get new consumers to their market instead of just young boys who like to play video games. One of the different feathers that wii has is in the function of its controller. The controller is designed to be operated by just using one hand. “Web porn targeted at UNCW library,Complaints of men viewing erotic sites in public view,” appeared in the Wilmington Star News, April 13, 2006.The article written by a staff writer, Veronica Gonzalez, discusses the problem that our library has with people (men) using the internet access to view adult sex websites. This becomes a problem because libries have to decide what to let viewers use and what to censor. I was very surprised to hear about this problem at our library. Now when I am in the library I notice my self looking around to see what people are looking at. I never would have thought that someone would be so disgusting to look at porn in a library. I believe that theses sites should be censored from public libraries and especially academic libraries. If you must look at adult sex websites or porn online that you should have the desentsy to do it in a private place. I think that this is a serious issue and I am glad to hear that Randall library is in the proccess of addressing this problem. I know that I would have a huge problem if I was in the computer lab trying to do a project and the guy next to me was looking up porn. I don’t think that I as a student should have to be subjected to that in a learning environment.

This article is discussing how the delayed retirement of teachers in now beginning to come to a halt. It is estimated that “40 percent of public school teachers say they don't expect to still be teaching in five years. Due to this the outlook for future teachers is very high. This article also mentions that teaching salaries are going to begin to increase. I think that this is great for news for teacher. I believe that teachers defiantly do not get paid nearly enough and that more students would consider teaching as a career if they were paid more. The article talks about the need for teachers in more rural areas but the downside of this is the fact that teachers in this region receive lower salaries. The regions that receive more competitive salaries do not have a large need for new teachers. However hopefully with the expected increase in teacher’s salaries hopefully more people will be willing to take teaching jobs where they are needed.

This article discusses the cons of having a lottery in a state. It says that when a state trys to sell the idea of having a lottery you will see that the state puts an emphasis on the benefits that the lottery dollars will bring to education. The author of this article does not agree with this, and says that it is not a benefit. This article says that all the lottery amounts to is legal gambling and that it “is a unstable source of income and negatively affects overall education funding”. I personally disagree with this article. I believe that having a lottery is a very good idea for states to consider and that when viewing the educational benefits of states with lotteries you will see that this is true. Although some people may view a lottery has nothing more than a way to gamble that is their problem. Sometimes in order for improvements you have to take the good with the bad. I believe that we will see several improvements in North Carolina’s education system as well as more people being able to attend college due to implementing the educational Lottery

"Boomers, Gen-Xers, and Milenials: Understanding the 'New Students'"
I personally found this article very interesting. It is amazing how different the generations are on all levels exspecially when it comes to technology. My generation differs emmencely whencompared to my parents generation. It is hard for me to remember a time when I did not use a computer as my primary research tool, as well as, for communication purposes such as email and Instant messenger. However my mother still has a difficult time trying to use our family computer for evven the simplest things like emailing. My mom would rather send a letter through the postal mail instead of using email because she is more comfortable with that. I think it is impressive when observing the computer skills of young children today. You give a child of the age 10 a computer and they are almost as sufficient with it as high school students. In today's society the internet is extremely important like in the article it says that kids view the internet as a way of life. I definately agree with this satement. I can not imagine how difficult my college career would have been with out the technology of the internet. Although at the same time I feel as though we as a community at large should not forget how important libraries are also. What if one day for some reason the internet isnt available? if this was to happen you would need to understand how to take advange of the library and all it offers.

This reading was concerning the many frauds and websites that obtain biased or incorrect information on the internet. This is extremely important information to be aware of, especially with the internet being the primary source used for research. To often people take what they find on the internet to be legit without ever even considering the possibility of it being false information. It is not uncommon to hear of people being scammed or taken advantage of by internet sites. I believe it is essential in today’s time, that children and teenagers are offered classes in secondary schools to learn the difference between good and bad sites on the internet. With the internet being so accessible, it is important that young children and teenagers are aware of the dangers and false information that is easily found online. I also think that schools should emphasize the import ants of using other means of research, such as libraries. By educating the children and making sure that they are well informed we will be bettering the future of our society. This will ensure a more informed world. The internet is only going to continue to grow and everyone needs to be aware of the disadvantages of the internet as well. Hopefully with more people becoming aware of all the illegitimate sites it will begin to deter people from putting theses sites online.

I believe that new ideas are very important to our society. With out people continuing to have ideas and plans to better our future everything would begin to decrease in value. Ideas are the building blocks of new inventions and technology that make our life more substantial. Inventions and technology that serve the purpose of bettering people’s living conditions or saving lives are especially important. As far as coping music and downloading CDs for free goes, I can understand why it is wrong. This affects the artist because they miss out on collecting their royalties. Although most artist have enough money where I doubt this causes a huge problem. Also I think that for the artist that are not as popular and are trying to get there name out there downloading their music for free is beneficial to them. As a result of getting to hear a band’s music for free you will be more willing to listen to it. If you like the band, most likely you will spread good word of mouth about them to your peers, therefore, helping to get there name out in the community. I think that when it comes to pharmaceutical drugs and new ideas for new drugs that the efforts and the actual drugs when produced are too expensive. Many drugs are able to help and even cure diseases that were once thought to be incurable. These drugs should be available to everyone regardless of cost. In order to help people all over the world I think that new ideas concerning medicine and cures for diseases should be shared with everyone, Instead of being so worried about recognition and greed. Inorder for the future of our world as a whole to survive I think it is essential for everyone to work together and share each others ideas in order to enrich our value of life.

10 reasons why the Internet is no substitute for a library

I found this article to be very interesting and I believe that it made good points for why the internet is not a substitute for a library. However I think that with the internet being so easily acessable that many people opt not to use libraries for the primary research tools. I know in my case this is true. Not because I don't value the library but, instead because I feel as though I get more completed at home on the internet than I do when i go to the library. This is a result of me getting side tracked and off subject while I am in the library, usually due to seeing people I know or because at times I find the library suprisingly loud. However as the article said you can't always find what you are looking for on the internet and sometimes what you are looking for cost money to obtain from the internet. I think this is a good point. i know I get very frustrated at times while looking for information online because I can't get exactly what i'm looking for. The library offers free information as well as assistance from the lirarians to help you with your research if you need it. Also when dealing with the internet you have to put up with a lot of useless informations and search through everything carefully to make sure it is realavent. At the library you don't have to worry about this. In conclusion I would have to say I definately do agree with the article although I know I will still for the most part use the internet for most of my research purposes.

Students Shun Search for Information Offline

I definately agree with this article. Most students that I know, avoid going to the library at all cost. If they do go it is usually to use the internet there not to check out a book or read a book. If its not to use the internet the only other reason my friends tend to go to the library is in hopes to find a quite place to study. In my opinion the library isnt even good for that with so many people thinking that time in the library is social hour. With the internet so available and easy to use most people my age are going to implement the internet as their primary research tool. This probably isn't always the best choice but students tend to take the easy way out. In the article it says that student trust everything on the internet to be true. I also agree with that. No matter how crazy something sounds, if you find prove on the internet it seems pretty legit to most people.

In "The Information Infrastructure: Libraries in Context," I learned that in the near future libraries are going to have a difficult time keeping up with all the new technology and information that is produced. However, with all types of information being so easily assessable online and electronically the need for actual libraries will begin to diminish. But this will not have a drastic effect on the development of new libraries all over the world because there will always be a want for a library. Libraries serve other purposes other than just a place to obtain information; they are also a place where you can go to enjoy time to yourself and all the other benefits that a library offers. I believe that in time as information becomes even more of an overload libraries will begin to make the changes necessary to accommodate the mass amount. Another reason I think that libraries will continue to remain is the fact that libraries are also about the historical value of books. With everything being online now, sometimes it is nice to just actually get a real book and read it.

On Monday I woke up at 8am. My alarm woke me up so this gave me information, to wake up. After I woke up I went into the kitchen and had a bowl of cereal. This was informative because I read the back of the box and it was giving nutrition facts and diet advice. I got ready for my Marketing internship. Getting ready for my internship gives me information because I have to make decisions as far as what to wear and what materials i need to be prepared for the projects that I am going to be doing. My internship gives me a lot of information, experience and helps me to further develope the marketing and sales skills that I already possess.
